What is Seldovia Science Fridays?

Seldovia Science Fridays is a free youth science- and nature-oriented educational program hosted by the Sea Otter Community Center in Seldovia, Alaska.

Our 2-hour weekly program is instructed and supported by a rotating staff of educators, staff and scientists from the Kachemak Bay Environmental Education Alliance (KBEEA; including the Seldovia Village Tribe, the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies, the Kachemak Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and the NOAA Kasitsna Bay Laboratory, among others), as well as parent and community volunteers.

Registration is required by the Wednesday prior to each event. Parents may also enroll their children for all events.

To enroll a child, please contact seldoviasocc@gmail.com

This webpage serves as the primary source of information for participating families.

When

Typically from 1pm to 3pm on most Fridays during the school year when school is in session. Science Fridays may not be held on no school days and early release days, in order to avoid conflicts with other community programming. Check this page for updates and notices.

Where

All events will begin and end at the Sea Otter Community Center in Seldovia unless otherwise stated.

Schedule

Event details, including the topic, instructors and necessary gear/clothing will be posted here by the Monday prior to the event.

Weather, Cancellations and Notifications

In the event that scheduled programs are canceled due to weather or other unforeseen events, a red banner will appear on the KBEAA website (including this page) for the duration of the day.

The banner will be posted at least 2 hours before the event, typically by 11 am on the day of the event.

Program staff will also do their best to send out emails and/or text messages to participating families. Please check this page for updates prior to dropping off children at the SOCC.
